So I absolutely LOVE the Letter from Birmingham. I read all those political and national thingys last year in American Heritage, and that was the first time I really understood them and took a good look and this reading truly is amazing. It was great to read it while looking for the different things that appeal to the reader. Martin Luther King really did well with all three of the appeals. He appealed to the senses when he talked about seeing old Negro women getting beating, or a daughter asking why she wasn't allowed at the park, or feeling the strong hate of your fellowmen in public. Those phrases, no matter who you are, would make you really feel something inside and re-think the way you treat others. He was also very convincing with his logic, he talks about the white moderate and how as a stander-by you are doing more against the good than you are doing for the good. It’s like being any other situation, if you allow something unjust or immoral to continue right under your nose without trying to help in some way, you have chosen to help the other side. Lastly, Martin Luther King uses ethical arguments EXTREMELY well in his letter. He links freedom and justice to national documents, he uses examples of religious leaders (including Christ), and he talks about religious laws. His use of religious stand point is very effective because he forces people to acknowledge the truth of what is right. It works well because every human being deep inside knows what is right and what is wrong. If I had lived back then, this letter would have fired up some serious feelings inside. I love how passionate Martin Luther King is in this letter.
When i was reading this, what really stood out to me was when he brought in the abuse that was taking place in society at that point. It really made me think, who would have the heart to do that to a person no matter what color they are. He also talks to all races instead of african americans because they are also being persecuted. This was an amazing letter and i enjoyed every, long, page.
